HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 23 (acn) Cuban Rafael Alba won a gold medal in the tae kwon do tournament of the 17th Pan-American Games under way in Toronto, Canada, by beating Venezuelan Carlos Rivas 11-4 in the finals of the over 80 kilogram division.
Alba, world champion in 2013, achieved obtained the third gold medal for Cuba in that sport.
On his way to the title in the great event, Alba beat U.S. athlete Philip Yun 15-3 in the quarterfinals, and in semifinals he defeated Mexican Misael Lopez8-5.
Previously, the also Cuban Lisbeilys Ferran lost to Colombian Jessica Bravo 9-3, in the fight for the bronze medal in the women's over 67 kilogram category.
After these results, Cuba led the tae kwon do tournament of these Games, totaling three gold and two bronze medals, tied with the U.S.A., and ahead of the strong squad of Mexico (2-4-1).
The other Cuban tae kwon do champions were Jose Angel Cobas (80) and Yania Aguirre (49), while Yamicel Nunez (57) and Daima Villalón (67) walked away with bronze.
