HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 16 (acn) The Cuban baseball team secured its presence in the semifinals of the 17th Toronto 2015 Pan American Games when beating 9-5 the Dominican Republic.
In match played at the Ajax President's Choice Baseball and Softball Pan American Centre, the Cuban squad guaranteed the win thanks to offensive of 11 hits, including two-run homer by outfielder Alfredo Despaigne.
Cuba's most outstanding hitters in the match were third baseman Rudy Reyes who hit 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and outfielder Urmaris Guerra, 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
The right-hander Lazaro Blanco was the winner by allowing four hits, two earned runs and seven strikeouts in five innings, to achieve his second win of the tournament, while Adalberto Mendez took the loss.
With this result Cuba was ratified in fourth place of baseball in the Games, with balance of three wins and two defeats, behind Canada (4-0), Puerto Rico (3-1) and United States (3-1).
The Cuban team will close the preliminary round today when facing Nicaragua, while the Dominican Republic will rival United States and Canada will clash with Puerto Rico.
