HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 15 (acn) The Cuban baseball team suffered its second defeat in four appearances by losing 1-3 this time against the host squad in the tournament of this sport of the 17th Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.
After five apparently peaceful innings to the Caribbean starting pitcher Yoennis Yera, the game took a turn for the home side at the height of the sixth inning due to the ultimately decisive three-run homer by the outfielder Tyler O'Neill.
Meanwhile, Cuba´s only run was scored in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to a solo homer by the also outfielder Alfredo Despaigne off reliever Andrew Albers.
In short, the defeat was for the lefty Yera (0-1), while the win went to the Northern starter Shawn Hill (1-0) and the closer Jeff Francis (2) took the save.
Cuba now holds two wins and as many defeats, those against the United States and Canada, two of the favorites for the podium, while the wins were over Colombia and Puerto Rico.
Today Cuba will face the strong team of the Dominican Republic.
