Best Cuban badminton player finishes third in Toronto

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 15 (acn) The Cuban Osleni Guerrero achieved a bronze medal after losing 1-2 against the host Andrew D'Souza, in one of the semifinals of badminton event of the 17th Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

After winning the first set with score of 21-13, the Cuban representative was unexpectedly surpassed by the young D'Souza 14-21 and 13-21 for the ticket to the final of the tournament.

The host player had previously beaten 2-0 (21-14 and 21-10), also unexpectedly, American Sattawat Pongnairat in the quarterfinal phase.

Thus, Osleni -number one of the continental ranking- cannot take revenge for the defeat he suffered four years ago in the Mexican city of Guadalajara versus Guatemalan Kevin Cordon, who advanced to the dispute of the golden metal.

Cordon defeated 2-1 (16-21, 21-14 and 21-18) American Howard Shu in the other semifinal and on Thursday he will try at the Markham Pan American / Parapan Center to retain the title he conquered in Guadalajara 2011.
