Cuba adds four gold medals in Toronto

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 15 (acn) The Cuban delegation earned four titles through canoeing, judo and gymnastics, during the fourth day of competition of the 17th Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

At the Welland Flatwater Center, Yumari Mengana was the most outstanding by winning in the women´s K-1 200 meters kayak and K-2 500 meters kayak events, the latter along with Yurieni Guerra, a result with which the kayakers of Cuba sealed their performance in the first position, with six gold, two silver and as many bronze medals.

Another sport that also ended on this date was judo, where the reigning Olympic champion and double world monarch Idalis Ortiz won the sceptre in the division of more than 78 kilos, with which the national team finished second with 3-3-8, surpassed only by Brazil (5-2-6).

The Cuban judokas also won three bronzed medals through Yalennis Castillo (78 kilos), Jose Armenteros (100) and Alex Garcia (+100).

The day also produced an encouraging surprise with the title conquered by gymnast Marcia Videaux in the vault event while Manrique Larduet could not climb the podium in the floor and finished third in rings.

Other actions on Tuesday included the surprising defeat of Osleni Guerrero to the local Andrew D'Souza, in a semi-final, by the score of 1-2 after winning the first set of the match, so he cannot take revenge for what happened four years ago in Guadalajara against Guatemalan Kevin Cordon.

The rowing neither meet expectations when failing to climb to the top of the podium, as they had to settle with two silver medals in the women's lightweight double sculls and men's quadruple sculls plus a bronze medal in the men's lightweight double sculls.

In addition, the weightlifter Javier Vanega finished third in the division of 94 kilos, while the women's water polo team lost 6-9 to Brazil in the dispute for the bronze medal.

In beach volleyball, the Cuban men´s duo reached its second win by defeating the United States 2-0, and the women´s pair debuted with a 2-0 win over Mexico.

Meanwhile, the baseball team was beaten 1-3 by the hosts and the men´s field hockey side tied 3-3 with Americans.
