HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 10 (acn) The Rogers Center stadium of the Canadian city of Toronto will dress up tonight during the official opening ceremony of the 17th Pan American Games, which will run until July 26.
The organizers of this grand continental tournament have devised a great artistic show with music, dance and folklore to welcome the more than six thousand athletes participating in a celebration of sports and culture of the Western Hemisphere.
The world famous Cirque du Soleil will bring its special and colorful blend of theatrical art and electrifying acrobatics to an original production created for the opening gala, which will also include the participation of local artists and volunteers.
The artistic and cultural elements of the opening ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games will frame iconic moments as the parade of the 41 participating countries and the lighting of the flame that will accompany the development of the event.
The Cuban Greco Roman wrestler Mijail Lopez, twice Olympic Champion and five-time world monarch, will carry the national flag at the head of the 443 athletes from the island who will compete in 25 of the 36 sports summoned to the great continental contest.
Cuba will attend the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games with the aim of maintaining the second place in the overall standing by country, major challenge due to the expected resistance of the Canadian hosts and Brazil as an emerging global sports power.
In the history of those continental competitions, Cuba has finished second since the edition of 1971 in Cali, Colombia, with the exception of Havana 1991, occasion on which it dethroned from the top spot to the US delegation.
