HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 7 (acn) Cuba beat 4-1 the US university national team in the last game of the traditional baseball match, won 3-2 by the American side.
In a game held at the training complex of the city of Cary, North Carolina, Cuba totalled 13 hits to support the good pitching performance of Lazaro Blanco, Livan Moinelo and Hector Manuel Mendoza.
Blanco worked four innings allowing four hits and one unearned run, with four strikeouts, and then came the lefty Moinelo, who was awarded the win by striking out three batters and allowing no hits in three and third innings while the closer Mendoza took the save despite allowing one run in the ninth.
In this fifth and final game of the bilateral series, the Cuban line up was made up by Jose Adolis Garcia (CF), Yorbis Borroto (SS), Frederich Cepeda (DH), Alexander Malleta (1B), Urmani Guerra (RF), William Saavedra (LF ), Rudy Reyes (2B), Yulexis La Rosa (C) and Raul Gonzalez (3B).
Cuba´s best hitters were Guerra, who drove in two runs, and Malleta who hit a solo homer.
As part of the training towards the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, this Cuban squad will also take part at the Baseball Festival of the Americas where they will face today USA and Canada on Wednesday, in both cases at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
