HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 30 (acn) After beating Peru on Monday in a hard-fought game, Chile will know today its rival for the title of the Copa America when Argentina to face Paraguay in the other semifinal match.
To reach the final of the South American tournament, the hosts defeated Peruvians 2-1 at the Julio Martinez Prádanos National Stadium, in Santiago de Chile, thanks to two goals by Eduardo Vargas at 42nd and 64th minutes.
After an even start, the fate favoured the Chilean team when at 20´ minute the Venezuelan referee José Argote sent off Peruvian defender Carlos Zambrano, for a tackle against Charles Aránguiz.
Due to the numerical inferiority, Peruvian options of winning decreased to a minimum, although they managed to score the equalizer in the 60th minute through an own goal by Chilean Gary Medel.
With that victory, Chile appears at just one step away from winning its first title in the history of the Copa America, but it must first wait for the winner of the other semifinal match between Argentina and Paraguay, based at the Municipal Stadium, in the city of Concepcion.
Argentina reached this phase by eliminating Colombia on penalties in quarterfinals, after a goalless draw in regular time, while Paraguay also needed that sort of definition to surpass Brazil after drawing 1-1.
Argentina has never been defeated by Paraguay in 23 matches in the history of the Copa America, with nearly perfect balance of 18 wins and five draws, including the game of the group stage of this contest, which ended 2-2.
The history and the level of its players identify Argentina as favorite to discuss the title against Chile next July 4, but Paraguay remains undefeated in the tournament, and get the semifinal highly inspired.
