Cuba Domadores loses title of World Boxing Series
Unexpected losses prevented the comeback of the Caribbean squad, defending champion, which just managed to win two bouts on Sunday through lightweight Lazaro Alvarez and light heavyweight Julio Cesar La Cruz.
Wins by flyweight Yosbany Veitia and welterweight Roniel Iglesias were predicted, but the reality was different and their losses preceded that of super heavyweight Yoandri Toirac at the conclusion of the evening.
Alvarez, twice world champion, was superior 2-1 (49-46, 49-46, 47-48) from start to finish over Zakir Safiullin and finished the campaign with nine straight wins.
La Cruz, also double universal monarch, easily defeated Nurdaulet Zharmanov 3-0 (49-46, 50-45, 50-45).
Meanwhile, Veitia was beaten 3-0 (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) by Olzhas Sattibayevthanks mainly to good defense and mobility from long range, a combination that led him to win four rounds.
The Caribbean, universal bronze medalist, was undefeated with eight wins in the last edition and seven in this one, but now he lacked the necessary thrust to meet the forecasts.
It was not a good day for the Olympic champion Iglesias because he also lacked of rhythm and lost 0-3 (47-48, 47-48, 45-50) to Aslanbek Shymbergenov.
Toirac, called up for this match, tried to equalizing when his team was down 4-5 but the largest height and reach of the world silver and Olympic bronze medalist Ivan Dychko, who won 3-0 (50-45, 50-45, 50-45), were too much for him.
The announcement overflowed the deserved joy of the fans, who were already happy since Saturday as their team had achieved wins through light flyweight Temirtas Zhussupov, light welterweight Samat Bashenov and middleweight Meiirim Nursultanov.
That day, Cuba’s wins were obtained by featherweight Robeisy Ramirez and cruiser Erislandy Savon and the scene was ready for the Sunday contention, confirmation of the solid physical shape and increasing in technical resources that accompany the Kazakhs, who reached this stage as leaders of Group B.
The Domadores led Poole A without losing any match and came out as favorites to retain the crown, but found a tough opponent whom they will also face at the World Championships later this year.
