HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 19(acn) Chinese debutant Yu Yangyi gained prominence in the third round by defeating local idol Leinier Dominguez and remains alone on top of the Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament Elite group.
The Asian player beat Dominguez in 38 moves of a Catalan opening and now tops the standings with 2.5 units.
The other two matches of this group, Ukrainian Pavel Eljanov vs. Russian Dmitry Andreikin and Cuban Lazaro Bruzon against the also Russian Ian Nempomnichtchi, ended in draws.
Yu is now escorted by Eljanov with two points, Leinier and Andreikin (1.5); Bruzón (1) and Nepomniachtchi (0.5).
Tomorrow's matches will be Yu-Bruzon, Eljanov-Leinier and Andreikin-Nepomniachtchi.
All the matches of the Premier Group ended in draws, so there was no change in the standings which continues headed by the host Yusnel Bacallao and Polish Jan Krzysztof Duda with 2.5 points.
Meanwhile, the Open Group, with over 170 contestants, shows the local Henry Soto as the only player with perfect performance in three outings.
