HAVANA, Cuba, jun 17 (acn) Cuba achieved its third victory in the women's Pan American Volleyball Cup after defeating Uruguay in match corresponding to group B of the preliminary phase of the contest staged at Eduardo Dibós Coliseum, in Lima, Peru.
According to the website of the event, Cuba won 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-20) led by Regla Garcia, top scorer of the match with 20 points (12 in attack, 2 blocks and 6 aces).
Melissa Vargas (13-3-2-8) and Sulian Matienzo (11-5-3-3) also stood out by the disciples of Roberto Garcia, while Sofia Neves (9-6-0-3) highlighted for the losers.
Vargas´ performance drew attention also by being one point shy of the record of aces in a game, in power since 2002 of American Nicole Branagh, who holds the record (9).
She is also close to establish a new record for this kind of tournaments, as she totals 20 aces in four games, 5 points shy of the record belonging to Mexican Ana Mercado, since 2005.
Cuba had previously beaten Peru (3-0) and Brazil (3-2) and lost against the Dominican Republic (1-3).
In yesterday's other matches, the Dominicans defeated Canada (3-0) in group B, while Colombia and United States beat 3-0 Costa Rica and Mexico, in that order, in Poole A.
Today Cuba faces Canada in the final day of the qualifying round, which also includes the matches Dominican Republic-Brazil and Peru-Uruguay in Group B.
Meanwhile, Mexico-Costa Rica, Colombia-Puerto Rico and Argentina-United States will compete in poole A.
