Cuba kisses good-bye to World Cup dream

Cuba kisses good-bye to World Cup dreamHAVANA, Cuba, Jun 15 (acn) The Cuban soccer team tied 1-1 on Sunday with Curacao at Havana's Pedro Marrero stadium, in the second leg of CONCACAF second round, thus saying goodbye to Russia 2018 World Cup.

Cubans opened the score very soon (5th minute) when Ariel Martinez took a corner and central defender Yenier Marquez headed the ball into the goal guarded by Eloy Room.

But 12 minutes later, the offensive midfielder Vidarrel Marencia equalised the score through a strong shot.

Things became worse for the locals when at 45th minute the Cuban goalkeeper Sandy Sanchez committed foul on the striker Gino Van Kessel and Panamanian referee Jafed Perea showed him the red card and Cuba was reduced to 10 men on the field.

The first half ended and it started a very heavy downpour that kept the game interrupted for two hours.

During second half, given the amount of rainfall, the field was in very bad conditions, players slipped in the mud and the score did not change.

With this tie, Curacao advanced to CONCACAF next qualifying phase for the WC, because away goals count double and the first leg had ended 0-0.
