Chile beat Ecuador in Copa America

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 12 (acn) Chile debuted with a victory on Thursday at the Copa America soccer tournament organized by that country when beating Ecuador 2-0 in match corresponding to Group A.

The host team dominated actions from the start of the match, held at the Nacional Stadium in Santiago, although the scored was not opened until midfielder Arturo Vidal scored a dubious penalty at 66th minute.

Chile scored the definitive goal at 83rd minute through Eduardo Vargas, who received assistance from star striker Alexis Sanchez after a costly error in the defense of Ecuador.

The victory in its debut is a boost for the local squad, which dreams of winning its first title in the Copa America, the oldest tournament of the world at the level of national teams and celebrating its 44th edition this year.

Led by world-class players like Arturo Vidal (Juventus Turin, ITA), Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal, ENG) and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo (Barcelona, SPA), the Chilean side is the top candidate to lead group A, ahead of Ecuador, Mexico and Bolivia.

Chile has never won the grand soccer event in South America, but has four subtitles (1955, 1956, 1979 and 1987) and has finished third five times (1926, 1941, 1945, 1967 and 1991).

The debut of Group A of the Chile-2015 Copa America will be completed today through the match between Mexico and Bolivia in Sausalito Stadium, in the city of Vina del Mar.
