Cuban volleyball team travels to Argentina for World League

HAVANA, Cuba, May 29 (acn) The Cuban men's team will face today the host Argentina in Group C of the second level of the World Volleyball League, based in the city of Mendoza.

The Cubans arrived in the South American nation after losing twice -in three sets- against Canada, in Calgary, at the start of the tournament.

In Detroit, venue of the North, Central America and the Caribbean (NORCECA) Champions Cup, they were defeated again last weekend by the Canadians (0-3) and Americans (1-3) and they beat Mexico 3-0.

With this unfavorable balance, the disciples of Rodolfo Sanchez will try to achieve their first win in the league, now before the local favorite team.

Lazaro Fundora´s injury complicates even more the performance of the young Cuban squad, to which Javier Jimenez and Mario Luis Rivera should join.

Jimenez was hired by the club Paok of the Greek Professional League and was unable to travel to Canada and the United States due to difficulties in the visas proceeding.

Cuba will also play as visitor with Bulgaria on June 5 to 7 after the two games in Mendoza, according to the website of the contest.

Australia, Brazil, Italy and Serbia, in group A, and Iran, Poland, Russia and the United States (B) appear at the first level tournament, while the second level also includes Czech Republic, France, Japan and South Korea (D) and Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands and Portugal (E).

Montenegro, Puerto Rico, Tunisia and Turkey (F), China, Greece, Mexico and Slovenia (G) and Egypt, Kazakhstan, Spain and Venezuela (H) are part of the third and last contest.
