HAVANA, Cuba, May 21 (acn) Cuban men's team will face Canada today in the North, Central American and Caribbean (NORCECA) Volleyball Champions Cup, which will grant two tickets to the World Cup in Japan next September.
After losing 0-3 away twice against Canada in Group C of the World League second level, in Calgary, the disciples of Rodolfo Sanchez will have another tough match against Canadians, now in the US city of Detroit.
According to the program, Cuba will then face the host squad and Mexico, respectively.
The situation seems complicated for the young team from the Caribbean island, as in addition to its bad performance on Canadian soil; they now add the loss of Lazaro Fundora, one of their best inside hitters.
The following matches of the League for the Cubans, as visitors-, will be against Argentina, from May 29 to 31, and Bulgaria, from June 5 to 7.
As local they will receive at Havana Sports City Coliseum the Argentines (June 12-14), Canadians (June 19-21) and Bulgarians (June 26-28), according to the website of the contest.
In the second game in Calgary, Cuba´s scoring leader was Rolando Cepeda, who scored 14 points, 11 of these in the attack, two in blocking and one ace, followed by Osmany Uriarte, 12 (11-1-0), and Felix Chapman, with 11 (8-2-1).
The other starters were Livan Osoria 7 (6-1-0), who replaced Fundora, setter Rolando Calvo 1 (1-0-0) and libero Yonder Garcia, while substitute players were the setter Yosvani Gonzalez and Dariel Albo, who scored one point in the attack.
