HAVANA, Cuba, May 19 (acn) Through Rafael Alba, in the 87 kg and Rosbelis Despaigne (+87), the Cuban squad finished its performance with two bronze medals at the World Taekwondo Championships, which houses the Russian city of Chelyabinsk.
Alba and Rosbelis, the last hopes to access the top of the podium in the farewell round, could not go further the bronze medals they have achieved on Saturday when arriving to the semi-finals with great options to fight for the title, reported mastaekwondo.com website.
Rafael, who sought to repeat his crown of the world reached two years ago in Puebla, Mexico, was defeated by Azeri Radik Isaev, who eventually climbed to the top of the podium, when beating Uzbek Jasur Baykuziyev in the final.
The website specialized in this discipline emphasizes that Despaigne was also beaten by Uzbek Smitriv Shokin, also winner of the golden medal.
In that division it was striking the semi-final defeat of the world monarch and Olympic runner up Anthony Obame, from Gabon, who surprisingly lost to Ivorian Firmin Zokou and finished third.
Meanwhile, the other bronze medalist in the 87 kg was Russian Vladislav Larin.
For Cuba this result was far short of its aspirations and its performance in the previous edition of Puebla 2013, where it finished second in the overall medal standings with two titles and three bronze medals.
