HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 27 (acn) The Cuban pair of Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez won the gold medal at the first stop of the 2015 North, Central American and Caribbean Beach Volleyball Circuit, based in the Cayman Islands.
Diaz and Gonzalez, champions of the Veracruz 2014Central American and Caribbean Games, defeated 2-0 ( 21-13 and 21-15) in the final to Puerto Ricans Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock, winners of the editions of 2012 and 2013, and runners up in 2014.
According to the sports publication Jit, in their way to the finals the Cubans defeated the duos from El Salvador, Honduras and the Cayman Islands and also the well ranked Americans Mark Burik-Curt Toppel.
Meanwhile, the Cuban women´s pair made up by Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez, also monarchs in Veracruz, did not advance to the semifinals after losing 1-2 (19-21, 21-17 and 8-15) against Canada 2 (Julie Gordon and Brandie Wilkerson).
The champions of this event were Jenny Kropp-Whitney Pavlik, United States 2, who beat 2-0 Gordon and Wilkerson (22-20 and 21-17) in the final.
