Cuban Domadores Sweep Lionhearts in WSB

Cuban Domadores Sweep Lionhearts in WSBHAVANA, Cuba, Apr 17 (acn) Rolando Acebal, head coach of the Cuba Domadores, considers that the 5-0 win his pupils achieved over the British Lionhearts in the 5th World Series of Boxing (WSB) fell within the forecast.

The result was in line with what we planned taking into account the shape of our boxers and the level of their rivals, but we knew they were going to be tough opponents, said the experienced trainer.

Although we had already met our first big goal of directly advancing to semifinals, we always insist on working well, and so it will be against Ukrainians in Havana, Acebal added after exchanging with representatives of the Cuban diplomatic mission who attended the match.

In the beautiful Box Copper Arena, in London, the Caribbean squad started the party through the young Joahnys Argilagos, and was completed by Andy Cruz, Yasnier Toledo, Arlen Lopez and Erislandy Savon.

The flyweight Argilagos, 18, defeated 2-1 the debutant Josep Maphosa and reached his fifth win in seven outings to mark the pace of his team in an evening marked by the presence of AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu.

In the featherweight division, Cruz achieved his fifth consecutive win of the tournament by beating 3-0 Sean McGoldrick, who had won in his only previous combat.

The light welterweight double world champion Toledo put things in order from the start when providing a technical knockout (TKO) to Sam Maxwell and thus took an important step in his aspirations to qualify to the Olympics of Rio de Janeiro 2016 as he now appears on top of the ranking with six wins without losing.

Meanwhile, the middleweight Arlen Lopez easily beat 3-0 also debutant Troy Williamson, result that left him with balance of 6-1, also leader of the ranking like Toledo and so strong aspirant to the two berths his division grants for next year Olympics.

Another Cuban who tops his division is the cruiserweight Savon -undefeated in 7 fights-, who this time beat by KO in the second round Romanian Jitaru Ionut-Mirel, although this weight only grants one ticket to Brazilian soil.

The Cuban team now exhibits 39 units, 58 wins and just seven defeats, and will receive the Ukraine Otomans on April 24th in Havana.
