Biography on one of the greats of Cuban baseball hits the standsCIENFUEGOS, Cuba, Apr 16 (acn) The substantial biography El Gigante del Escambray (The Escambray Giant), about Antonio Muñoz´s life and baseball performance, was presented at Cienfuegos, within the program of the 15th Book Fair.

Osvaldo Rojas Garay, journalist and author of the work, highlighted the humanism, kindness and humility of the iconic baseball player, born on January 17, 66 years ago.

In humorous note, Rojas Garay said the number five Muñoz wore on his jersey is as an amulet to him, because he came into the world on the fifth delivery of his mother and also won five Intercontinental Cups and as many world championships.

The writer told ACN that his next book is called Fidel nunca se poncha, based on the link between the Commander in Chief and the Cuban national sport.

For his part, the also writer Luis Machado Ordex, presenter of the book at Cienfuegos provincial library, emphasized the wide compilation of this work, which tells the story of each of the 370 official home runs hit by the slugger.

He highlighted Rojas Garay´s prodigious memory and the detailed data collection of Muñoz´s baseball history, to the point of providing in his book curiosities like the last homer hit by best left-handed hitter of Cuban revolutionary baseball would be on January 17 to coincide with his 42nd birthday.

El Gigante del Escambray, published by Mecenas Publishing House, not only reveals the nature of an athlete and the brightness of a great player, it is an inescapable part of the national pastime and the Cuban sports history.
