Two Cubans qualify to Chess World Cup

Two Cubans qualify to Chess World CupHAVANA, Cuba, Apr 7 (acn) Cuban GMs Lazaro Bruzon and Ermes Espinosa took over the leading positions and won the two World Cup berths granted in the Zonal 2.3 Chess tournament.

In the Ecuadorian city of Libertad, Bruzón remained undefeated and reached 7.5 points from possible nine, half an unit more than his compatriot, also unbeatable.

The local player Miguel Medina finished third with 6 points.

The event brought together 15 contestants from six countries and they seemed few for the nine convened rounds, especially since there was a great gap between Cubans and the rest.

The World Cup will take place from September 10 to October 4 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where Cuba will also depend on Leinier Domínguez, secured by his place in the ranking.
