HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 23 (acn) Cuba won the bronze medal when defeating Puerto Rico in the 3rd U-18 Women's Pan American Volleyball Cup in the Sports City Coliseum, in Havana, where Argentina won the title.
The Cubans, who earned the ticket for the World Cup to be held in August in Lima , Peru, beat 3-0 ( 25-21, 25-22 and 25-16) Puerto Rico.
The top scorer of the match was the local Heidy Casanova with 16 points, followed by Puerto Rican Dariana Hollongsworth (13) and her teammate Gretell Moreno ( 10).
In the semifinals, Cubans lost their undefeated status after loosing 1-3 against the Argentine, with scorecards of 15-25, 13-25, 25-18 and 22-25.
This Sunday , Argentina took first place in the competition by winning 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-23 and 15-8) over the previously unbeaten Dominican Republic, while Peru beat 3-2 (27-25, 24-26, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12) Mexico, a result that allowed it ending fifth.
Cuba ranked first of group B with 14 points and three wins without losses, followed by Puerto Rico (9 / 2-1), Chile (7 / 1-2) and Costa Rica (0 / 0-3).
Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic (13 / 3-0) won poole A, escorted by Argentina (7 / 1-2), Mexico (7 / 1-2) and Peru (3 / 1-2); this quartet arrived to Havana with their WC ticket already assured.
The first edition , Tijuana 2011, was won by Argentina, followed by Mexico and the Dominican Republic, respectively, and the Brazilians triumphed in the second, Guatemala City 2013 , escorted by Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, in that order.
