Cuban baseball: Industriales on the brink of collapse

Cuban baseball: Industriales on the brink of collapseHAVANA , Cuba, Mar 18 (acn) Industriales is now at just one loss of being eliminated from the struggle for accessing to Cuban baseball playoffs after losing on Tuesday 7-4 against Isla de la Juventud.

Yusniel Ibáñez, Luis Felipe Rivera and Jorge Luis Barcelán led the Pirates´ offensive by hitting homers in a match won by reliever Jesus Reynaldo Amador and the closer Héctor Manuel Mendoza earned a save.

Mendoza faced a serious threat at the bottom of the ninth inning when the locals had the bases loaded but the ace pitcher managed to dominate veteran Carlos Tabares and young Lourdes Y. Gourriel to seal the win of his squad.

Thus, Isla d la Juventud took an important step in its aspirations to qualify to the playoffs as they now appear alone in the fourth seat of the standings with 47 wins and 38 defeats, one game ahead of Industriales and the current monarch Pinar del Río (46-38).
The latter kept alive their chances of accessing to the playoffs by beating 13-5 Artemisa with the win to the account of Yaifredo Domínguez and offensive highlight of Randy Arrozarena and Donal Duarte, with a homer and three RBIs per capita.

To advance to the semi-finals, Alfonso Urquiola´s disciples must still complete the sweep over Artemisa, and also expect Isla de la Juventud to achieve only one win in the two games remaining against Industriales.
