Cuba vs. Russia today, on FIFA date

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 20 (ACN) With an expected attendance of more than 35,000 people, the Cuban senior national team will face Russia today at the Volgograd Arena stadium, a match corresponding to the last FIFA date of the year.

To take advantage of this opportunity to face Russia, Cuban technical director Yunielys Castillo has opted to keep the call-up of young players, as happened at the A level of the Nations League, where they managed to stay.

With a team full of young players, Castillo also attended last June's FIFA dates against Chile and Uruguay, and was able to appreciate the communication and teamwork on the field.

But Russia is a better team than the one presented on that occasion by the Chileans and Uruguayans. And if their coach Valeri Karpin called up his key players for today's match, the Cuban could have outgrown that ultra-defensive 5-4-1 playing system.

In his call-up list there is a notable absence of established players, although he did include two of his star players already recovered from injuries: captain Luis Javier Paradela and holding midfielder Karel Espino.

But the alert has been sounded. This will be the last FIFA date before the draw for the World Cup Qualifiers. And with a defeat, Cuba would lose points in the ranking.

Currently, the Cuban national team is the worst ranked of those that would be in the third group of the draw.

Therefore, a failure, along with a good result by Bermuda in their match against St. Vincent and the Grenadines, could push them into group four, which would mean they would have to face a stronger group during the World Cup Qualifiers.
