Cuban woman boxer pleased with her result in Pan Am Games

SANTIAGO DE CHILE, Chile, Oct 25 (ACN) Cuban boxer Legnis Calá (57 kg) confessed that she is happy with her performance in the women's boxing tournament of the Pan American Games currently under way in this city.

Calá, third in the recent Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador, lost 0-5 her fight against the Venezuelan Omailyn Alcalá, fifth in the World Championships held this year. As a result, the Cuban will be neither on the podium nor in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“Even if I didn’t even get a bronze medal, I feel good about being in the Pan American Games and going down in history as the first woman boxer to achieve a victory in these events,” she remarked in statements to the press. “I gave it all in the ring and fought until the end, but this time I couldn’t win.”

As to her future, she said that she still does not know if there will be another chance to qualify for the Olympics, although she will keep training for other competitions.

On Monday, Calá lost by split decision (4-1) against the Mexican Jennifer Carrillo, who was second in the 2018 Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
