Cuban athletics expects 11 medals at the Pan American Games in Chile

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 3 (ACN) Cuban athletics aims to win 11 medals at the upcoming Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, to be held October 20 to November 5.

George Romero, technical chief of the national commission of that sport, told the press today that the competitive purpose will be to achieve at least one title, in addition to two silver and eight bronze medals.

Speaking at a preparatory course at the Jose Marti International Institute of Journalism, Romero explained that these objectives may vary depending on the athletes attending the continental multisport event on behalf of other nations.

He added that the greatest options for a golden medal will be in the men's and women's triple jump, with Leyanis Perez, Lazaro Martinez and Cristian Napoles, medalists in the recent World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, which concluded in late August.

According to Romero, right now Cuba has 34 athletes on the qualifying list, and the men's 4x100 meters relay can still be included.

The executive pointed out that the representatives of the Island had four competitive peaks so far this season, which is quite hard for them in their preparation.

The Caribbean nation will participate in 29 of the 49 events in athletics, and from the medical point of view, all the members of the national team are ready to take on the challenge of the Pan American Games, he concluded.
