HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 18 (ACN) The Cuban men's volleyball team suffered its third consecutive setback today and finished in fourth and last place in Group C of the 16th Pan American Cup, to be held until Sunday at the Astros Arena in Guadalajara.
According to the site www.norceca.net, in Thursday's 1-3 defeat, the Cubans won the first set, 25-21, but fell in the second, third and fourth periods, 23-25, 19-25 and 21-25, in which they were inferior in all aspects of the game and gave up 33 points due to their own mistakes.
The official statistics of the match showed the superiority of the Mexicans in attack, 50-46 points, blocking (13-7), service (5-2) and own errors (28-33),
For Cuba, the most outstanding players were opposite Alejandro Miguel Gonzalez, top scorer of the match with 27 points, 22 in attack, three in blocking and two in service, and middle blocker Angel Suarez (10/10-0-0).
Mexico had its most outstanding players in Diego Gonzalez (16/12-2-2), Josue de Jesus Lopez (15/13-1-1) and Yasutaka Sanay (11/8-2-1), who completed the only five players with double digits.
With these results, Cuba will discuss today the positions from seventh to tenth, after a performance far from what was expected by the specialists despite participating with its B team.
Friday will also see the quarterfinals, Saturday the semifinals and Sunday the games that will define the teams that will win the bronze and gold medals.
