Weightlifting, the best for Cuba in 2nd edition of CIS Games

 HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 11 (ACN) Cuban weightlifters finished with a bronze medal and other quality performances at the 2nd CIS Games in Belarus, where Cuban rhythmic gymnasts also competed.

In the 71 kilograms (kg) body weight division, Yeniuska Mirabal came in third in the snatch with 96 kg, in the rebound with 121 kg and in the biathlon with 217 kg.

Only Russia's Zarina Gusalova, who accumulated 237 kg, and Belarus' Siuzanna Valodzka (234) surpassed the Cuban, according to the official statistics of the competition, which will be held in 22 sports from 4 to 13 August.

For Cuba, Juan Carlos Zaldivar finished fourth, with a total of 345, in the 102 kg category, led by Russia's Georgi Kuptsov (392), and hosts Yauheni Tsikhantsou (391) and Siarhei Sharankou (366).

Olfides Saez finished fifth in the 89 kg, with a biathlon of 335 kg, in an event with a podium that included Belarusian Petr Asayonak (362), Russian Roman Chepik (361) and another local, Yulian Kurlovich (355).

Arley Calderon placed fifth in the 61 kg, with a record of 252, in an event dominated by Belarus, Vietnam and Russia, in that order.

Marifelix Sarria finished fifth among the super heavyweights over 87 kg, as Ayamey Medina, sixth among the 81 kg.

With Mirabal's bronze, Cuba ranked 12th, shared with Egypt, in a medal list led by Russia, Belarus and Uzbekistan with 89, 29 and nine golds, respectively.
