HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 3 (ACN) The Cuban men's basketball team suffered its first setback in the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador on Sunday, where they lost 84-90 to Puerto Rico.
The Cuban team started the game very well by dominating the first quarter 30-19, but in the second period the Puerto Ricans reacted with a favorable score of 25-14, to go to the break both teams tied at 44 points.
Then, in the third and fourth quarters, the Puerto Ricans won 19-18 and 27-22 to reach the victory, the first for them in this regional event after losing in their debut against the Mexicans with a score of 53-64.
The winners were supported by the offensive contribution of Jorge Pacheco, who scored 18 points, and André Curbelo (17); while Yoanki Mencia (23) and Karel Guzman (21) stood out for the Cuban team.
In that duel, which took place at the National Gymnasium, a key factor was the good work of Puerto Rico's players, who grabbed 44 rebounds, compared to only 25 for their rivals.
