HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 28 (ACN) Continuous mistakes while driving and defending the ball led the Cuban national soccer team to lose 0-1 its first game to Guatemala in Pool D of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Team Cuba was in command for the first 20 minutes, but then lost the initiative and started making the usual mistakes and playing a disorganized game. Indeed, shortly before halftime, a foul by Cuba’s Dariel Morejón was whistled for a penalty that the Guatemalan Darwin Lom kicked but goalkeeper Arozarena managed to push to the post.
The Chapin goal came in the 47th minute when midfielder Nathaniel Méndez slipped in a pass to Lom, who fired a shot past Arozarena.
Cuba will next be opposite the Guadeloupeans (on July 1), who tied 1-1 with the favorite Canadians.
