HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 26 (ACN) With two wins and a setback in the tournament hosted by Nicaragua, the Cuban men's basketball team guaranteed its place in the Qualifiers for the AmeriCup 2025, which will begin in February next year.
On Sunday, in the closing of the continental pre-qualifiers, the Cuban team lost 75-78 to the locals in a very close match, to which both teams arrived with a balance of two wins and no losses, so the winner would secure the first place and finish undefeated.
The Nicaraguans dominated the first half 45-42 and after the break came out on top 16-15 in the third period, to reach the final period with a four-point advantage, in which the visitors won 18-17, which was not enough to overcome the difference.
On Friday, the Cuban representatives defeated the U.S. Virgin Islands 72-63 in their debut, and on Saturday they defeated Antigua and Barbuda 97-53.
This pre-qualifying event brought together eight teams divided into two groups, A based in Chile and B in Nicaragua, where each team played against all the members of their group, that is, a total of three games and the best two of each group automatically advanced to the Qualifiers for the FIBA AmeriCup 2025.
Along with the Cubans and Nicaraguans, who won their place in segment B, the Chileans and Paraguayans did so in segment A.
