Cubans in individual matches today in Archery World Cup

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 16 (ACN) Cubans Maydenia Sarduy, in the women's division, as well as men Hugo Franco and Juan Jose Santiesteban, will compete today in the individual matches of the Archery World Cup to be held in Medellin, Colombia.

Franco, silver medalist in the Pan American Archery Championship hosted by Chile last November, will be competing against an old rival of the area, Nicholas D'Amour, from the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In the case of Santiesteban and Sarduy, their opponents will be South Korea's Lee and Kang, respectively, in what should be a tough challenge for both Cuban athletes.

Also on Thursday, the mixed team made up of Franco and Sarduy rivaled their French counterparts in search of advancing to the next round of the event.

On the second day of the tournament, the men's recurve archery team lost 4-5 to Spain in the first round of the direct elimination, although they did it in a tiebreaker, so they demanded the maximum from their rivals.

On Wednesday, by individual performance, the three archers from the island totaled 1,946 units to occupy 18th place among the registered teams.

Those performances allowed Franco to place 51st among 95 competitors, with a score of 657; while Santiesteban achieved a personal best of 653 to place 63rd.

Only Vega was unable to advance to the direct duels phase with a total score of 636, which placed him in 78th place, according to the official website of the competition.

Among the women, the only representative of the Caribbean nation, Sarduy, accumulated 616 points to take 62nd place among 84 archers.
