Cuba finished fourth in World Boxing Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, May 14 (ACN) Cuba finished in fourth place by countries in the 22nd World Boxing Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where it could barely win a gold medal, in addition to three silver and two bronze medals.

It was a surprising—and worrying—result for a 13-strong team which performed largely below par, considering that Cuba had won the previous edition in Belgrade 2021 with three crowns and two third places.

Cuba’s final balance in Tashkent, where newcomers to the world stage outdid the team’s mainstays, was 39 wins and 12 losses, enough to be relegated to fourth place behind Uzbekistan (5-2-2), Kazakhstan (4-1-0) and Russia (2-0-4).

Only the middleweight Yoenlis Hernandez managed to retain the title won in Belgrade in a competition marked by his country’s 23 consecutive victories in the classifiers.
