HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 24 (ACN) Cuba won the Pan American Judo Open, winning two gold and three bronze medals, leading the overall medal tally (5-0-4), with stage at the Volleyball Pavilion of the Olympic Center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
According to the International Federation, on Sunday, the Cuban champions were Idalis Ortiz, in over 78 kilograms (kg) and Liester Cardona (100 kg), who finished with two and three victories without defeats, respectively.
The winners of this last day were completed with the bronze medalists Jorge Martinez and Maikel Mckencie, both in the 81 kg, and Idelannis Gomez (70 kg), all with three successes and one setback.
Also on Sunday, Nairelis Fuentes (78 kg) competed for Cuba, but she came in fifth place -she competed for the bronze-, with two wins and one loss.
Special attention among specialists was focused on the final bout between Ortiz, multi-Olympic and world champion, and Venezuela's Amaranta Urdaneta, who on Friday beat the Cuban in the final of the qualifying tournament for the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023.
The outstanding performance began on Saturday, when Arnaes Odelin (57 kg), Maylin del Toro (63 kg) and Orlando Polanco (66 kg) topped the podium, while Zamarit Gregorio (48 kg) won the bronze medal.
With these results, Cuba (5-0-4), with no presence in the 73, 90 and over 100 kg, led the overall medal count, followed by Dominican Republic (3-2-1), Mexico (2-2-4), Canada (2-2-3), Venezuela (1-3-1) and Croatia (1-1-0), the six of the 22 participating nations that shared the 14 golden metals.
