Cuban judo on its way to San Salvador 2023

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 27 (ACN) Cuba took an important step toward the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023 after winning five gold medals, five silver medals, five bronze medals and two fifth places in the judo qualifiers held in Panama City.

Yordanis Arencibia and Julio Alderete, head coaches of the women's and men's teams, respectively, reported that the next and last judo tournament scheduled for March 2023 in the Dominican Republic is likely to add further numbers to Team Cuba’s results.

By countries, Cuba led the competition with five medals of each color, followed by Mexico (3-2-3), Dominican Republic (3-2-1), Venezuela (1-3-5), Colombia (1-1-0) and Puerto Rico (1-1-0), the six nations that won at least one title.

While it is true that Cuba’s performance bodes well for the games in San Salvador 2023, it is a fact that several of the main figures fell short of the expectations, given their results in recent top-level competitions, as in the cases of Iván Silva (90 kg) and Andy Granda (+100 kg), who lost in the finals.
