Cuban women's volleyball team loses to DOM REP at Final Six Tournament

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 5 (ACN) The Cuban women's team lost in three sets to the host Dominican Republic on the first day of the 2nd edition of the Final Six Volleyball Tournament, held at the National Volleyball Palace in Santo Domingo.

The defending Dominican champions beat the Cubans on Sunday with scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-18, who could do little against the domination of their rivals in all aspects of the game.

The statistics of the match reflect the superiority of the Dominicans, with positive balances in attack, 40 points to 33, blocking (10-6), service (7-3) and the errors that gave so many points to the opponents (12-18).

The top scorer of the match was Dominican Isabel Peña, with 14 points, 13 in attack and one in blocking, followed by her teammates, Gaila Ceneida Gonzalez (12/8-3-1) and Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez (10/6-3-1), while for Cuba, Dezirett Madan (9/9-0-0) and Ailama Cese (9/7-1-1) stood out.

Actions will continue today with the matches between the Cubans and the Canadians, the Puerto Ricans and the US, and the Mexicans vs. the Dominicans, in that order.

Next Friday, the fifth place of the tournament will be disputed and the semifinals will take place, with the matches between second vs. third and first vs. fourth, which will define the teams that will dispute the medals on Saturday.
