Cuban swimmers debut at FINA Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 16 (ACN) Cubans Elisbet Gamez, Andrea Becali, Luis Vega and Adrian Navarro competed today in the first day of the 15th World Short Course Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, an event in 25-meter pool, until December 21.

None of them qualified to the finals but they achieved commendable results and, among them, the best was Gamez, the main figure of Cuban swimming in the last two Olympic four-year periods.

The 24-year-old Cuban, more experienced in the national team, was fifth in her elimination heat in the 200m freestyle, with 1:57.26 minutes and the second best reaction time, 0.64 seconds, finishing in 16th place among 50 contenders, according to the official results tables of the International Swimming Federation (FINA).

Meanwhile, Becali won her heat in the 100m backstroke with 1:01.25 and placed 30th overall, Vega was ninth in his heat in the 200m butterfly with 1:57.89 and finished 24th overall, and Navarro led his heat in the 400m freestyle with 3:58.31 and finished 52nd.
For the FINA ranking, Gamez scored 835 points, Becali 719, Vega 773 and Navarro 706.

In this event, Gamez will also compete in 400 m freestyle, Becali in 200 backstroke, Vega in 100 butterfly and Navarro in 200 freestyle, thanks to places granted by FINA.
