HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 25 (ACN) Cuba's Health Ministry and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) signed an agreement on Wednesday in Havana that will allow the island to join a group of nations that receive financing to purchase medicine, vaccines, syringes and other supplies.
Health Minister Roberto Morales and the Director of PAHO Carissa Etienne signed the accord of the Vaccine Procurement (Revolving Fund) and
Strategic Public Health Supplies (Strategic Fund) during the 3rd International Cuba Health Convention underway at Havana's Convention Center.
The representative of the World and Pan American Health Organizations in Cuba, Dr. Cristian Morales characterized the incorporation of Cuba in the cooperation mechanisms as important, having the first of them with a purchase volume of close to 100 billion dollars to benefit almost 30 countries.
He explained that the amount will be destined to the purchase of 150 products for the treatment of HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, cardiovascular illnesses and other essential items of the sector which will benefit Cuba.
Regarding the Revolving Fund, he recalled that this technical and solidarity cooperation mechanism exists for over four decades and a purchase volume of 800 billion dollars is destined to help the 42 member States with vaccines, syringes and resources aimed to fight diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.
The representative of the WHO and PAHO in Havana pointed out that attending the achievements and efforts of the Caribbean island, its next challenge will be part of the 31 producers.
On behalf of the Ministry of Public Health, its National Director of Epidemiology, Dr. Francisco Duran thanked the possibility being offered to Cuba to join the mentioned funds, which, he said; starting from a better planning, management and control, they will contribute in stabilizing the purchase of medicines and other supplies, its quality to benefit the population.
