HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 9 (ACN) The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment announced on Wednesday the presentation of the 2016-2020 National Program on Biological Diversity.
Specialists said that this is a strategic document in compliance with the Guidelines of the Economic and Social Policies of the Revolution, in addition to the implementation platform of the National Environmental Strategy regarding biodiversity.
A group of 27 Entities of the Central State Administration with its Business Board was consulted on its content, in compliance with the guidelines approved by the 7th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party held in April of 2016 in Havana.
With the support of the World Environment Fund and the UN Development Program, the text responds to one of the commitments agreed on with the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nairobi, Kenya on May 22nd 1992.
After a high participation process in drafting the document, it deals with the causes of the reduction of biological diversity, control of its main threats and the promotion of its sustainable use.
It also stimulates the conservation of its ecosystems, habitat, species and genes, favors the restoration and conservation of its ecosystems that offers the essential services for all and improves the national capacities for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Cuba complies with its obligations since 1996 after signing the Convention when it concluded its National Study and in 1999 its National Strategy both coordinated and executed by the National Bio-security Center, adscript to the Ecology and Systematic Institute.
During the event held at the Hotel Memories Miramar, the 11th Meeting of the National Environment Fund will be presented this time dedicated to projects that contribute to the application of the already mentioned program.
