Advantages of Solar radiation to produce energy

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 10 (acn) Cuba receives solar radiation equivalent to the energy produced by 50 million tons of oil each day, said on Thursday in Havana an expert in the field when referring to the advantages of the Sun.

PhD in Sciences, Luis Berriz Perez and president of the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Sources of Energy and Environmental Respect (CUBASOLAR) said that the Sun´s rays in Cuba in one day is more than the energy of oil consumed in five years.

In statements to ACN, he added that Cuba assimilates 1800 times more solar energy than the oil consumed and even characterized his statement.

The specialist pointed out that this also changes from one place to the other and different months of the year with an average value of 5 kWh per square meter a day.

Berriz Perez mentioned that the other sources of energy, wind, biomass residue, reservoirs and rivers depends on the site of each and in the case of many municipalities one of these is enough to achieve its energy supply.

Without a doubt, said the President of CUBASOLAR, theses sources of energy are available anywhere and are much more than what is necessary to guarantee sustainable development

He asked, would it be possible to turn the energy consumers, among them, schools, hospitals, stores, small local industries and homes, into positive energy spaces; or where energy produced is more than what is consumed?

In this regard, he gave as an example a house which consumed an average of between 150 and 200 kWh of electricity in a month although to adopt an adequate decision we must know the consumption but not by where they live but its final use.

A well-equipped home with a refrigerator, television, DVD, fans, iron, washer, lamps, savings bulbs, electric water heater, electric stove, rice cookers and others consume an average of 186 kWh a month.

Berriz Perez said that once there is an analysis of the electric expenses we can conclude that it is better to change the lamps with led and savings lightening. He added that the same can be done with a refrigerator for a high efficiency one, the elimination of the DVD with a modern television and preferably LED, same with the water heater for a solar one that practically does not consume energy.

Although there are very good electric stoves, much better than gas and even better if they are by biogas while the same goes with rice cookers but also improve bio climate conditions if the ceilings are painted in white and the walls with a light color, recommended the president of CUBASOLAR.

He suggests placing mosquito nets on the windows and opening them to improve the lightening at night as well as ventilation 24 hours a day.

Electricity consumption can be reduced with these measures from 186 to 87 kWh a month and in addition installing a solar panel of 1 kW in power to generate an average of 140 kWh a month turning a home into a positive energy, said Berriz Perez.
