Construction work improves wards at Cuban pediatric hospital

 SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, August 4 (ACN) The expansion of admissions capacity and improvements in structural conditions and service quality are among the benefits of the construction work being undertaken at the General Surgery and Gastroenterology wards of the Jose Marti Perez Provincial Pediatric Hospital in this central city.

With a cost of more than one million pesos, the work currently in the completion phase included replacing the carpentry, the entire electrical system and plumbing networks, painting areas, and replacing clinical furniture, according to what Dr. Ramon Aquino Lorenzo, director of the institution, explained to the Escambray digital newspaper.

He explained that from about twenty available beds, the General Surgery service expanded its number of beds to 25, which allows it to handle the gradual increase in the number of children treated there under superior conditions since the reopening of the Surgical Unit.

In early 2025, the surgical waiting list was more than 500 patients, and today only about 180 children remain to be surgically operated on, the doctor noted, clarifying that, thanks to the joint efforts of professors from Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus, about 15 minimally invasive gallstone surgeries were recently performed, representing a significant step forward in pediatric care in the region.

Nearly 50 million pesos were invested last year in major renovations to the "Jose Marti Perez" Surgical Unit.

This work made it possible to expand the number of operating rooms to four, including one for emergencies, install new medical gases, and refurbish the plaster rooms, biopsy rooms, and the sterile classified area.

The executive also highlighted that among the work planned for the remainder of the current schedule is the future installation of a cubicle for five children with chronic illnesses requiring long hospital stays who live permanently at the center.

This space is planned to be adjacent to the Progressive Intensive Care Unit and will meet all the requirements for caring for these types of patients.
