LAS TUNAS, Cuba, Dec 18 (ACN) Today, Maylin and Mayelin Tellez Bruzon, the first Siamese twins in Latin America to survive a surgical intervention to separate them, are 50 years old in this Cuban eastern city, happy and in excellent health.
The twins were born joined at the abdomen in the maternal center of Las Tunas, but due to the complexity of the case, Dr. Jeremias Hernandez Ojito called the Lenin Hospital in Holguin, then the most important health care center in the north of Oriente, to reveal the news.
Both babies were transferred to that health unit, where a week after Adelina Bruzon's delivery, they were taken to the operating room, with the consent of the babies' parents.
The multidisciplinary team, headed by surgeon Rafael Vazquez, used an electric scalpel to avoid bleeding, and after two hours, the operation was over.
Thus, the opening of the abdominal cavity, the cutting of the xiphoid appendix and the division of the common liver into two equal parts were successfully concluded.
Thanks to this success of Cuban medicine, Maylin and Mayelin celebrate their birthday with their children and grandchildren.
