HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 12 (acn) The occurrence of three perceptible earthquakes during the first days of the year with magnitudes ranging from 3 to 3.2 on the Richter scale are normal reports, according to the National Seismological Research Center (CENAIS by its Spanish acronym).
From the 5,799 earth tremors registered by the national seismological network in 2014, only 20 were detectable, which corresponds to the usual behavior, ranging from that number to 30 or over 40 annually, without having a vigorous shaking, Dr. Tomás Chuy Rodriguez, investigator of the institution, said.
He added that such events are common throughout Cuba , but this occurs more often at the Oriente Falla, for being right on the border of the North American and Caribbean plates, he told Granma newspaper.
About the CENAIS scientific-technical potential, Chuy Rodriguez said the center is undergoing a process of modernization in its stations, spread from Pinar del Rio to Guantánamo.
Thanks to agreements with China, today Cuba has high precision equipments, digital data processing capacity in real time, and other programs that have contributed to the development of seismic hazard map of the country.
