Cuba to Develop Software to Detect and Treat Ataxias

Cuba to Develop Software to Detect and Treat AtaxiasHOLGUIN, Cuba, Jan 6 (acn) The processing group of biomedical data at Oscar Lucero Moya University, in Holguin, is working to develop a software that facilitates the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of patients with hereditary ataxias.

Allen Jimenez, a junior in the specialty of Computer Science and member of the team since entering the center, told AIN that the program's importance lies in the possibility to quantify more accurately and objectively the patients' response.
In addition, Jimenez highlighted that the use of the software will allow qualified personnel accessing much subjectivity data as the angular speed, inclination, the center of motion and mass.
The beginnings of this scientific link with the Clinic of Ataxia have its roots in 2008 with the completion of the doctoral thesis of Professor Rodolfo García, who developed a mathematical algorithm to promote the study of eye movements of this disease.
This study center emerged in March last year in order to focus its knowledge in terms of contributing to scientific development and has among its members to students and teachers of Informatics and Mathematics.
Currently its members work in seven new projects related to studies of coordination, gait disorders and eye movements.
These projects include the NSGait, which is under development and aims to use a sensor through video game technology for motion capture.
Another of these programs is the NSGlob, consisting on the development of a glove that allows the study of the ability of people to make opposing motions, main affectation in patients with this disease.
All these applications will be integrated into the NSWeb computer system that will facilitate access to specialists and those interested and it is expected in the first quarter of this year the first clinical trial to be implemented, Jimenez added.
