Italy recognizes Cuban support to Calabria's health system

HAVANA, Cuba, May 12 (ACN) The support of Cuban doctors to the health system of the region of Calabria, in Italy, was highlighted during a conference at the University La Sapienza, in that European country.

According to the portal Cubainformacion, Professor Luciano Vasapollo, dean of the Faculty of Economics of that university, praised the high value given to this action by the Italian people, who are grateful for the altruism of Cuban doctors.

The professor, who is also president of the Italian chapter of the Network of Intellectuals in Defense of Humanity, emphasized that this expression of solidarity and humanism contrasts with the criminal measures against Cuba imposed by the United States, and said that they represent dark stains on the conscience of the West.

Cuba's ambassador to Rome, Mirta Granda, and Dr. Luis Enrique Perez, head of the Caribbean nation's medical mission to Italy, also took part in the seminar.

The specialist pointed out that Cuban professionals in Calabria cover nine specialties, with a wide professional experience, most of them participants in brigades that provided health assistance in several countries.

As part of the mission in that region of southern Italy, promoted by the president of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto, 51 health specialists from the Caribbean country (38 men and 13 women) are already working in local hospitals, and it is expected to reach about 500 in the coming months, said Luis Enrique Pérez.
