Cuban environmental initiative contributes to the Sendai Framework agreement

GUANTÁNAMO, Cuba, Dec 29 (ACN) A project called Community Development and Adaptation based on watershed management in the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park (PNAH) consolidates the Sendai Framework (2015-2030) for sustainable development and resilience of communities and ecosystems, according to Sc. D. Bárbaro Zabala Lahite, a researcher with the local unit of environmental services who participates in this initiative together with experts from Mexico, Dominican Republic and Guatemala.

Established in 2018 and funded by the Federal Republic of Germany through the NGO Oro Verde, this enterprise intends to finish by November 2024 a management action plan to improve ecosystem and human resilience in the areas surrounding the Jaguaní, one of Cuba’s largest rivers.

The expert remarks that the project aims to reduce human and material loss as a result of extreme weather events through the adoption of adaptation and mitigation measures to tackle climate change.

The joint work of these four regional countries is in line with the purposes of the Sendai Agreement, signed seven years ago in the Japanese city of the same name during the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction endorsed by the United Nations.
