Cuban province gets ready for vaccine clinical trial

CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, May 12 (ACN) Based on the experience gained in previous actions with the Finlay Vaccine Institute (FVI), specialists from a children’s hospital in the province of Cienfuegos are getting ready for the clinical trial with the vaccine Soberana Futuro, which includes two doses of the vaccine Soberana 02 and a booster dose of the Soberana Plus one for children between the ages of seven and eleven months.

Dr. Mercedes Fonseca Hernández, a second-degree specialist in Pediatrics and coordinator of the study, told ACN that everything is in place in terms of the medical staff and the target group of children—contingent on their parents’ prior consent—who will be vaccinated and then kept in observation and monitored by the specialists.

She stressed that both Soberana 02 and Plus are quite safe and effective, as evidenced by previous studies carried out on other pediatric groups as well as on adults.

Cuba has designed a broad vaccination campaign to fight COVID-19 with its own medicines, an effort pioneered precisely by the province of Cienfuegos, where teenagers in the 12 to 18 age group are currently receiving the booster Soberana Plus, as a sign of the political will of the Revolution to leave none of its children unprotected.
