Havana, Jan 3 (ACN) Cuban Health minister Jose Angel Portal assessed the COVID-19 impact on his sector during the year 2021 and said the epidemiological situation caused unimaginable high tension on health services.
On his Twitter account, Doctor Portal said that over the past 12 months the country reported 954 thousand 417 COVID-19 patients, with the highest peak after the second quarter of the year.
The growing trend in the number of positive cases kept steady till August when Cuba registered the highest number of sick people in just one month—265 thousand 121 infected persons. September brought a favorable scenario with considerable lowering trend in the number of cases and this trend kept on during the next 13 weeks.
The best epidemiological scenario occurred during December, despite a slight increase in the number of cases over the last two weeks, some 3 845, the minister noted and went on to regret the high number of minors who got infected with the virus in 2021—some 175 thousand 321 pediatric cases, standing for 18.4 percent of all the cases.
Also significant was the number of pregnant or breastfeeding women, some 6 thousand 974 whose protection became a priority in all Cuban territories.
Out of all COVID-19 positive cases in 2021 in Cuba, 9 thousand 691 arrived here already infected with the virus, standing for 1, 02 percent, the minister explained and added that many of those persons had been carriers of different coronavirus variants, which made the scenario very complex.
Cuba was first affected by the Beta variant, later by the Delta and just on November 29th the first Omicron case was detected here; it was a traveler from South Africa. Omicron has already been detected in 13 provinces with 92 patients affected, most of whom are imported cases, though there is already a local Omicron spread.
The year 2021 also brought optimism with the fast immunization of most of the people using locally developed vaccines and by December 31st some 9 million 672 thousand 464 citizens had already received the three-shot vaccination scheme, standing for 86.5 percent of the over 11 million population. By that date two million 174 persons had also received a booster shot.
Looking at the new year 2022, the minister said it will bring many challenges which requires of improved actions.
