Cuba Uses Chinese Vaccine to Fight COVID-19 Spread

Cienfuegos, Cuba (ACN) Cuban scientists and director of the Finlay Vaccines Institute Dr. C. Vicente Vérez Bencomo announced the massive immunization in this south-central province with a combination of Chinese and Cuban vaccines starting Sunday, August 29 for citizens of 19 years of age and older.

The program includes the vaccination of children between 12 and 18 years in September.

Doctor Verez Bencomo said that they aim at immunizing the population to inflict a strong hit on the COVID-19 spread, which reached a spike over the past months with its most contagious and lethal variants in Cienfuegos province.

The scientist said that they will administer the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine (79 percent efficacy in adults) with the Cuban Soberana Plus booster 21 days later.

The information was given during the daily briefing of the Temporary Working Team on the COVID-19 pandemic in Cienfuegos.

The scientist said that the administration of the Chinese vaccine in Cienfuegos was suggested by the World Health Organization, while the territory counts on the necessary number of doses for a population which is considered small.

As of September 5th, the combined Chinese-Cuban vaccination could also include adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age.
