Spanish Journalist Ignacio Ramonet Received Felix Elmuza Medal

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 20 (acn) Spanish journalist and Professor Ignacio Ramonet received on Monday in Havana, the Felix Elmuza Medal, maximum distinction granted by the Cuban Journalist Association (UPEC) to national and foreign professionals in the field.

The ceremony was held at the UPEC National Headquarters with the presence of Culture Minister Abel Prieto, and other renowned figures.

The recognition was held in the context of the centennial of the birth of Felix Elmuza, Cuban journalist that was one of the participants of the Granma Yacht and in honor of the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro on occasion of the 1st anniversary of his physical disappearance on November 25th.

Among some of the reasons of the distinction, UPEC's Vice President Aixa Havia said that it's for Ramonet's work in the promotion of friendship and collaboration relations between Cuban journalists and other nations.

She recalled that Ramonet has dedicated his work to communication, and pointing out the dangers of a world dominated by the media monopolies while encouraging the world to confront the dominating power.

Hevia praised Ramonet's solidarity in all aspects when defending the Cuban Five, who served long unjust prison sentences for fighting terrorism anywhere that was necessary to raise the voice for Cuba.

She added that Ramonet had the privilege of speaking to Fidel a number of times which helped to publish the book entitled 100 Hours with Fidel and helped promote and demonstrate who the greatness of the leader of the Revolution.

Ramonet also paid an emotional visit and tribute to the Comandante in the monument where the Cuban leader lays to rest at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery in eastern Santiago de Cuba.

The medal was given to Ramonet at the conclusion of the space called Catalejo where the Spanish journalist exchanged with his colleagues in the written press on his recent work that got him a Honorarium at the University of Havana and a Member of Honor at the Writers and Artists Association UEAC.
