European Union praises Cuba's use of renewable energy sources

Havana, Sep 11 (ACN) Cuba is a Latin American and Caribbean model for the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Jolita Butkeviciene, European Union Cooperation Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said today in Havana.

It is not only about the potentialities in solar radiation and biomass that Cuba owns, but also in the commitment of its national authorities in the fostering of RES, the expert, with 10 years in office and born in Lithuania, told the Cuban News Agency.
She considered that it is perfectly possible to implement in Latin America and the Caribbean the Cuban experiences in the transformation of its energy grid due to its high dependence on imported fuels for electricity generation, which constitutes a contribution to reducing the impact of climate change.
Butkeviciene confirmed the European Union's support for the Cuban energy development strategy, with its participation today in the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) at the presentation of the joint project to support the energy efficiency of the RES in terms of local development.
One is related to Energy Efficiency and Conservation, in charge of the National Office for the Control of Rational Use of Energy (ONURE), of MINEM; and the other renewable sources of energy to support local development, implemented by the Centre for Studies of Energy and Industrial Processes, of the University of Sancti Spiritus.
Directors of both institutions offered details on the application phases of best practices and the design of technical solutions to improve the quality of life in communities in the central provinces of Matanzas, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Sancti Spiritus, as well as in the eastern provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Holguin.
